AtMedfieldCollege,sciencebuffDexterRileyandhisfriends,includingRichardSchuylerandDebbieDawson,eavesdropviaahiddenwalkie-talkieonaboardmeetingledbyDeanEugeneHiggins,discussingthesmallcollegescontinuingprecariousfinances.Laterthatafternoon,ProfessorLufkinshowsHigginsaroundthesciencelabwhereDexterisworkingonanexperimentwithinvisibilityandanotherstudent,Druffle,explorestheflightofbumblebees.Thatnight,duringapowerfulthunderstorm,theroofofthelabisstruckbylightning,sendingacurrentofelectricitydownametalbeamandthroughDexterscomplexexperimentcomponents.Thenextday,asDexterexamineshisburntequipmentwithdismay,HigginsmeetswithA.J.Arno,arecentlyreleasedprisoner,whohadalsopurchasedMedfieldsmortgage.WhenDexteraccidentallydropsonehalfofhisglassesintoacontainerofhisexperimentalformula,itappearsasifthesubstancedestroysthem,butuponcloserexamination,Dexterrealizestheframesaremerelypartiallyinvisible.Afterseveraltests,Dexterplaceshisfingersintheliquidandtheydisappear.SchuylerandDebbiearriveandarehorrifiedtoseeDexterwithapartialhand,butDexterinsistsSchuylertestthesubstanceaswell,admittingonlyafterwardthathedoesnotyethaveanantidote.
